>> at an indoor swimming pool in japan, water pours down the stair in the wake of the devastating earthquake. video was shot disaster and devastation continue after the deadly earthquake in japan. one of the concerns, fires and explosions at failing nuclear power plant located near the epicenter of the earthquake. we have the latest developments tonight, including fallout concerns surrounding the nuclear power plant and what experts are saying about the possibility radiation could reach the west coast of the u.s. the situation continues to change after friday's devastating earthquake. here is the latest. the death toll is more than 2400 and expects to rise as high as 10,000.

more than 3,000 people are missing. thousands may have been swept away in the tsunami. 450,000 people are in shelters. the earthquake was upgraded to 9.0, making it the 4th largest in the world. explosions and fires are reported at the fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant. radiation levels there are up. kron 4's jonathan bloom has the latest at the plant and the overall radiation threat there and here. >> reporter: an explosion at fukushima daiichi sents a cloud of smoke and huge chunks of debris flying into the air. the latest of flea explosions after last week's earthquake and tsunami. the four nuclear reactor are housed here and in this before and after picture, you can see

where one of the walls was blown off. those officials said the radiation leaks at the plant were not enough to cause health concerns, the prime minister now asked people to stay at home with the windows closed. those who lost their home thins earthquake and tsunami filed fine evacuation centers. meanwhile members of the u.s. navy may have been exposed to radiation while performing search and rescue missions from helicopter. 17 crew members were exposed to low amounts of radiation. the navy said follow-up tests indicate they will be fine. though some expressed concern radiation could make it to california, he told us the danger is remote. >> practically zero. because there is not that much

an attempted bank robbery. 4:30 this afternoon a gunman entered the bank of america on tamalpais drive. police arrived with hostage negotiators and made contact with the robber. emplowy and customers were allowed to leave. after several hours of negotiations the suspect did exit the bank on its own. he is in police custody. now for a look at other stories around the bay area today. tuesday is the last day for teachers. we heard estimates in the oakland area of 540 jobs that could be lost. in san francisco as many as 500. reporting in san bruno, jr stone, kron 4 news. >> reporter: over the weekend thieves broke in to east

bringing colder air. back now to our japan earthquake coverage. japan's early warning system is being credited for alerting people, which allowed many to duck and cover and to get to safety. a similar system is under development in california. kron 4's dan kerman looks at when it might be ready. >> japan spent $3 billion on its system. the brown dots show all warning stations in the country. now, look at california. many stations in the bay area and los angeles, but few elsewhere and that's the problem. >> we don't have the ground to be able to have an operational system. >> reporter: david says even if that happens, california has another problem. >> the other problem, we don't have the infrastructure to
